The city of Alexandria was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, making it Egypt's second largest city. It is home to a wealth of historic sites, a thriving port and beautiful Mediterranean coastline. The golden, sandy beaches remain a throwback to its past as a cosmopolitan seaside resort in the 19th century. Today, families, couples and young travellers choose holidays to Alexandria to experience its incredible historical remains and attractive Mediterranean setting.

The Citadel of Qaitbay is one of Alexandria's most impressive monuments. Built in the 15th century AD, it was built to overlook both the city and the sea to protect them from invasion. Now housing a Maritime Museum, it is well worth seeing inside and out. The city is also home to an impressive Roman amphitheatre among other sites, and visitors can learn more about its history at the superb Alexandria National Museum.

One of Alexandria's biggest attractions is the Catacombs of Kom el Shaqafa. These underground tunnels actually predate Alexander the Great, and were likely used as private tombs. You can take a tour 35m below ground, and observe the fascinating statues and carvings, with both Egyptian and Greek influences.

When you need to cool off, head out onto Alexandria's waterfront. The pleasant Corniche is a boardwalk stretches 15km along the coast, full of lively markets and seafront restaurants. Maa'moura and Montazah Beach are good spots for swimming and sunbathing. You can also hire a boat for a leisurely cruise of the coast.

Alexandria holidays are great for foodies. The city is said to have the best seafood restaurants in Egypt. You can eat everywhere from small, locally-run cafés to high-end seafront restaurants gazing out across the Mediterranean. There is plenty of good Middle Eastern cuisine, as well as the odd Italian. There are a number of bars, clubs and traditional coffeehouses to visit in the evenings, as well as the lively nightlife at the hotels.
