The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a friendly, liberal city with a cool and cosmopolitan character.
Renowned for its stunning architecture and iconic canals, beautiful Amsterdam offers world-class galleries and museums, an easy-going vibe and one of the most happening nightlife scenes around.
The best way to explore Amsterdam is by bike. Just by weaving in and out of the cobbled streets and over and under the canal bridges that zigzag through the city you'll soon get a feel for the way of life here.
Visiting the banks of the historic canals and 17th century merchant houses of Grachtengordel is essential for a holiday to Amsterdam. Just west of there, lies the leafy district of Jordaan with its mazy canals and narrow, winding streets, which is undoubtedly one of the most charming areas of the city.
Explore the eccentric antique shops in the Old Quarter, visit the floating flower market on the Singel, see the legendary tulips in Vondelpark or shop 'til you drop on the fashionable Kalverstraat street, where you'll find everything from high street stores to vintage boutiques.
Museums & galleries...
If its culture you want, Amsterdam has plenty of it. Anne Frank's House is one of the most famous and moving sights in the city while art lovers will find Amsterdam has plenty to offer with the world-class Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, as well as Rembrandt's House, which hosts wonderful exhibits of the Great Master's work.
A legendary party city...
The home of Heineken, there's no shortage of bar-lined streets and squares, and it's no secret that city breaks to Amsterdam offer electrified nightlife. From the infamous Red Light District and the 'coffee shops' to welcoming brown cafés - a traditional Amsterdam pub - via cutting-edge dance clubs, Amsterdam's nightlife is varied, exciting and easily one of the most vibrant in Europe.
Many of the best clubs can be found around the lively area of Rembrantsplein-Leidseplein and Reguliersdwarsstraat, the latter of which enjoys thriving gay and lesbian scenes.
A favourite with stag and hen parties, cheap hotels can be found near the Red Light District while the main hotel area is close to the Museumplein, where you'll find everything from budget hostels to boutique hotels and luxury five-star accommodation.
Escape to 'Dam...
A great getaway for couples and groups looking for a good time, Amsterdam city breaks always leave you wanting more. With its friendly atmosphere and café culture, you can do as much or as little as you want and still be satisfied that you've experienced the city at its best.
