Ascend the stairs of the Acropolis and head through the colossal Propylaea gateway and you'll find the elegant Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion temples. Dual monuments to Athena and Poseidon, which are built on the site of a battle between the two gods according to Greek mythology.

The undoubted highlight of both the Acropolis and holidays in Athens in general, is the iconic Partheon. An architectural masterwork made entirely of marble, this titanic temple is one of the greatest structures of the ancient world and dates back to the 5th century BC.

The Acropolis also houses the ultra-modern, New Acropolis Museum, which is essential viewing. Other world-class museums you can explore on an Athens city break include the National Archaeological Museums, the Benaki Museum and the Byzantine Museum.

Athens offers both contemporary and traditional Greek cuisine at its finest, and the areas of Plaka and Psirri are home to a fine selection of fashionable restaurants and modern bars. In the evenings you'll be able to relax and unwind in stylish Kolonaki in one of the many quaint little cafÚs for a coffee or some traditional Greek ouzo.

Athens' nightlife is legendary. The city buzzes with 24hr energy and vibrancy. It is home to countless nightspots that range from traditional tavernas to cutting-edge pulsating nightclubs, via live music venues, chic cocktail lounges and arty basement bars. You may need the spirit of an Olympian to keep up!

Shopping...

The Greek capital is also a fantastic destination for shopping. You'll find everything from carpets and embroidery to designer boutiques and fine art. Pick up a bargain or two at the colourful Monastriraki bazaar or visit the Museum of Greek Folk Art in Plaka, which offers a range of authentic goods.
