The capital of Catalonia and cultural capital of Spain, Barcelona is a beautiful and breathlessly vibrant metropolis blessed with everything you could want from a world-class city and far more.
Barcelona is a city of avant-garde architecture and fountain-lined boulevards. A city where tapas bars hide among winding medieval corridors and fashionable boutiques and super-slick nightclubs jostle for attention. A city where you can relax on a golden beach that glows in the Mediterranean sunshine or watch the world's greatest football team ply their trade. Yet among the glamour and excitement, colourful markets and a bustling working port remind us that the traditional Catalan way of life is not lost.
City breaks in Barcelona are loved by all. Whether you plan on treating the family to a weekend away, enjoying a fun getaway with your friends or eloping with your loved one for a romantic escape, few cities can match Barcelona.
Things to do...
There are many things to do on a city break in Barcelona. Go bar hopping down La Rambla, browse the fashionable designer stores of El Born, before returning later to hit the clubs. Wander the green pastures of Park GÃŒell or explore the cobbled courtyards and alleys of the stunning Gothic Quarter. Marvel at the glittering trophy room at the Nou Camp and soak up the rays on Barceloneta Beach. Eat freshly-caught fish down by the harbour or sample the culinary delights of the famous La Boqueria Market.
Antoni Gaudi's artistic presence can be felt throughout the city. Fearlessly imaginative, La Sagrada Familia cathedral is his masterwork. It and continues to attract millions of visitors each year despite the fact that it remains unfinished after 100 years or so of construction.
Fans of the architect should also make a beeline for La Pedrera, Palau Guell and Casa Batlo to see more of his brightly-coloured tiles and chimneys, all of which are Unesco World Heritage sites.
Art in Barcelona...
There is plenty more for art-lovers on a Barcelona holiday including the Picasso Museum, the Joan Miró Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MACBA).
