The old city...

Cordoba's old city is the first stop, with its labyrinth of medieval streets and Jewish quarter. A Roman bridge stretches across the Guadalquivir River, leading to the fortified gate of the town. The gate has been restored as the interesting Museum of Al-Alandus Life, which offers an insight into the history of Islamic Andalusia. Beyond the gates are charming ancient squares, pleasant gardens and the 8th century Alcazar, a former royal fortress.

The Mezquita...

At the heart of the old town is the Mezquita, the most popular attraction in Cordoba. The Mezquita is a huge 8th century mosque that was converted to a church and centuries later, a cathedral. It's well-known for its many striking arches, orange groves and distinctive bell tower. It remains one of Andalusia's premier historic treasures.

There are plenty of good places to browse for gifts and local crafts. The city produces beautiful traditional jewellery, as well as handmade ceramics. It's also known for local wines, and in May, one of the best times for Cordoba holidays, there's a lively wine tasting fair among other celebrations to mark the "Month of Cordoba".

Andalusian cuisine...

Cordoba holidays are great for foodies, with an abundance of authentic Andalusian cuisine, plenty of fresh fish, tapas and Spanish classics like gazpacho. Dining in the older parts of the city are particularly special in summer, when the plazas fill with locals and visitors spilling out of the cafes, enjoying glasses of the local wines.
