- Overview
Albena is named after a female character from a tale by Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov and is one of the purposely built resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast Built from scratch in the 1960's its now a small mature town with its own high street, squares and even little train system with scheduled routes around the centre. The beach is the main attraction - with a long stretch fine and clean golden sand; the seas are shallow and in summer clean, warm and clear. Many of the resorts numerous hotels have views of the Baltata National Reserve - a relatively rare combination of dense wet forest and a seashore. An additional attraction - especially with the locals - is the biggest spa and wellness centre on Bulgarian seaside. It uses exclusively local mineral water - hypothermal with 30°C temperature and slightly mineralised. As ever the spas are good value for British visitors. With cheap flights to Bulgaria the region is becoming increasingly popular as a family holiday destination with British tourists who appreciate the superb scenery, great food and drink and value for money facilities.
