The most northerly capital in the world, Reykjavik is an invigorating and original choice. This city lies between the mountains and the sea. The name means 'Smoky Bay', after the steam clouds which rise from its geothermal springs. Discover a land of fire and ice with active geysers and bubbling mud pools alongside thundering waterfalls. Swim in a steaming hot spring or go seal watching along the unspoilt coast. The Northern Lights make a breathtaking display, while the long, light summer days remind you that you are in the land of the midnight sun. Iceland is an invigorating and original choice. The climate is surprisingly mild thanks to the Gulf Stream - summers are cool but winters are warmer than in New York or Vienna! Enjoy the view from the monumental Hallgrims Church.
