Holidays to Helsinki

Where Nordic cool meets Soviet might, Helsinki rises from the shores of the Baltic - and perfectly combines the cultures of both. In truth, Helsinki's a city unlike anywhere else. Yes, it has the crisp, clean lines you'd expect from a modern Northern European capital (and local hero Alvar Aalto has designed enough buildings to give the city it's signature, rather functional look) but Helsinki doesn't play by the rules - take a weekend break in Helsinki and you're as likely to enjoy visiting a Sami market down on the harbour side, complete with reindeer stew and cloudberry cocktails, as you are to enjoy a wallet-busting gastronomic delight in any of the city's thrilling new restaurants. 

Helsinki is a city which loves the finer things in life - its nightlife is surprisingly wild and uninhibited (you'd never think it to look at them by day, but, after an Aquavit or two, Finns are extremely hospitable). And, during the 'white nights' of summer, it seems that the whole city is out, searching for the next party. The stark white neo-classical cathedral in Senate Square, perhaps Helsinki's sole landmark, is worth a visit, as is the Teutonic facade of the city's central railway station. City breaks in Helsinki suit those interested in art, architecture, fresh air and good living.
