It's a youthful place, with a real buzz, whatever time of year you choose to visit. Its concentric rings of canals wander past handsome townhouses, bright flower markets and grand, cobbled squares while, away from the water, its compact grid of streets house some world class museums, excellent cafes and, of course, enough after-hours excursions to keep even the hardened night owl happy.
Pumping nightclubs aside, by far the prettiest way to experience Amsterdam is to get up early and wander its atmospheric streets, stopping here and there to enjoy a coffee and a pastry. Amsterdam is a small city and its historic core rewards slow, leisurely exploration.
On your travels, you'll inevitably pass through Damrak - the chief thoroughfare lined with restaurants and gift shops. The street ends at Dam Square, the huge, open heart of the city where you'll find the 17th century Royal Palace and, older by 200 years, the Nieuwe Kerk.
Of the city's many canals, the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht are the chief arteries - with Herengracht's 'Golden Bend' being the most photogenic stretch, lined by exquisite canal houses, some of which you can explore. The streets around Westerkerk - home to the intensely moving Anne Frank's House - lead on to the arty maze of streets around the Jordan area.
Amsterdam's red light district is, frankly, not as shocking as its reputation would have you believe - in reality it's no more than a cluster of streets hawking coach-party friendly titillation, no more than you'd see elsewhere in other liberal capitals.
