Since it had millions of pounds plunged into its restoration, Izmir is to Turkey what Dubai is to the United Arab Emirates. Full of American-style malls and five star hotels, Izmir holidays are quickly attracting tourists looking to book an alternative trip to Turkey. A traditional port city, the jewel in Izmir's crown is its striking harbour, complete with waterfront bars and restaurants that line the main promenade and the pice de rsistance; a pier built by Gustave Eiffel, the same man who put his name to Paris' famous tower. While there isn't an Izmir beach per se, there are two sandy coves on either side of the city so you still get a chance to top up your tan. Hard-core sun-worshippers can head along the coastline to the beach-heavy resort of Kusadasi. Once a quiet fishing village, it is now overflowing with souvenir shops, department stores and the famous Grand Bazaar that has over 1000 stalls to sample - it's quite simply a shopaholics delight. It also has some of the best beaches in the area so if you prefer to spend your money on pedalos and ice creams head to the coast. Both resorts also have a wealth of evening entertainment on your doorstep ranging from cocktail bars to fine dining and cheesy clubs to tribute acts, you won't be stuck for things to do in Izmir.
