From mountains to beaches, discover the beauty of Kefalonia holidays

The largest of the Ionian islands in Greece, Kefalonia is both a popular, yet idyllic destination, appealing to visitors looking for untouched Greek charm, in a romantically beautiful setting.

Since staring as the location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, tourism has increased, and with five harbour ports and an airport connecting it to Athens, and other islands such as Zante and Lefkas, it's easily accessible. Many visitors head to Lassi, just outside the capital of Argostoli, and home to some great swimming bays.

The island of Kefalonia offers plenty of idyllic beaches, many only accessible by boat, and famous Myrtos beach is considered one of the top five most beautiful beaches in the world.

The island is quite mountainous in its terrain, the highest point being Mount Ainos - also a stunning national park. Olive trees cover more than half of the island, and so not only is olive oil a crucial part of the island's economy, but it plays a tasty role in many local dishes.

Spend part of your Kefalonia holidays exploring the capital, Argostoli. Here you can discover more about the island's history at the Archaeological Museum, as well as the Castle of St George, which dates back to the 16th century. Spend a day by the breathtaking Koutavos Lagoon, or head north to the Lighthouse of Agios Theodoros - a phenomenal spot for watching the sunset.
