La Palma lies at the north western end of the Canary Islands, and is often considered one of the most spectacular. La Palma holidays offer a wealth of natural beauty, and outdoor pursuits for visitors of all ages. The island itself is the tip of a volcano, which stands 4 miles from the ocean floor. Along the south of the island is the Cumbra Vieja ridge, a volcanic crevice which joins the crater in the centre of the island. This dramatic landscape drives the wild beauty of this scenic island. La Palma's beaches are formed from soft, volcanic black sand, and many have been awarded Blue Flag status. Puerto Naos is one of the most popular beaches, dotted with palm trees; while Playa Nueva, nestled between banana plantations on the west coast, is a more secluded spot for sunbathing. There are also two natural salt water pools near San Andres which have been formed from volcanic rock, and are perfect for swimming. Higher on the island, pine trees and Canary Island juniper grow abundantly, and it is here you can find native species of birds and lizards, specific to this archipelago. There are many hiking trails offering great views over the island. As well as the natural beauty of La Palma, the cities have much to offer its visitors, from great restaurants to charming historic buildings. Santa Cruz de la Palma is the capital, featuring colourful buildings, pretty plazas, and is also home to the island's main port. Whether you prefer to be active in the outdoors or lazing on the black sand beaches, La Palma holidays have something for everyone.
