Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands, just off the west coast of Morocco. It's a spectacular island of rugged and dramatic volcanic terrain that has long been a favourite beach holiday destination.

Lanzarote offers first-class resorts and hotels, perpetual sunshine, sublime sandy beaches that range from golden to volcanic black and masses of activities and attractions for all ages. In terms of climate, Lanzarote has more in common with the nearby Sahara Desert than mainland Spain. Enjoying year-round sunshine and very little rain, Lanzarote is the perfect place to enjoy a winter sun holiday.

Spectacular volcanic landscapes...

Centuries of volcanic activity has resulted in breathtakingly magnificent volcanic scenery and nowhere is that more evident than the famous 'luna landscapes' of Timanfaya National Park, which provided the stark backdrop for the Hollywood epic, Planet of the Apes. Its craters and craggy rocks can be viewed from the sky via helicopter, on foot or even on camelback, while the island is also home to the world's largest lava cave.

Where to stay...

Picturesque Playa Blanca is a firm-favourite. Situated on the far south coast, the resort is the gateway to the famous Papagayo beaches, arguably the finest on the island. There plenty of excellent restaurants and bars and lots of things to do during the long sunny days.

Costa Teguise on the stunning east coast is a very popular resort yet retains a laid-back atmosphere. It's ideal for a relaxing beach break in Lanzarote. There are five golden beaches, a top golf course, a fantastic water park and plenty of activities, fashionable shops and restaurants.

Puerto del Carmen is the island's nightlife capital and certainly the place to go for young people looking to party. The longest-established resort in Lanzarote, it's home to a Blue Flag-awarded 6km long beach and a wealth of shops, bars, restaurants and clubs.

With dolphin and whale spotting trips on offer, as well as water sports and water parks, family holidays to Lanzarote are eternally popular, while couples will find various quietresorts ideal for a romantic escape.
