Discover the irrepressible Big Apple with a city break in New York...

GENERAL

The iconic City That Never Sleeps is the perpetual trendsetter that always lives up to its reputation.

With some of the most famous sightseeing opportunities in the world, peerless shopping and dining and an electric nightlife the envy of the world over, this is city that really does have it all.

The Empire State Building...

The city's famous landmarks and attractions are a good sight-seeing starting point on New York city breaks. In the Midtown area, you can kick off with the breathtaking Art Deco Empire State Building, one of the city's most famous sights. The observatory is over 1000 feet high and the views are legendary.

The Statue of Liberty...

The towering icon of Lady Liberty is perhaps the finest symbol of New York City. Officially named 'Liberty Enlightening the World', the statue stands at 152 feet tall, and is situated on its own Liberty Island. Regular ferries go there from Manhattan, along with neighbouring Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants first touched American soil. The main building is now the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.

Museums...

NYC has world-class museums and galleries. The whole city breaks to New York could easily be spent trying to pack them all in. Stroll uptown - or grab a cab - and start with one of the most interesting buildings; the American Museum of Natural History, whose famous steps have appeared in many films and TV shows.

Galleries...

The Upper East Side is the best place to head for art enthusiasts. It is home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which houses an incredible two million works. The Museum of Modern Art, locally known as MoMa, is another popular choice, and visitors flock to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum to see the spiralling building itself as much as its art work.

Hit the shops...

Some visitors plan city breaks to New York purely for the shopping. The variety and choice is endless; Fifth Avenue is lined with the most upmarket of designer labels, whereas the lower villages are the home of vintage and cool. There are always flea markets and food markets around, particularly at the weekends.

Eating out...

The variety of cuisine available in New York City is unbeatable. Eating out occurs three times a day for many natives, which is why on every street you'll see carts selling everything from hot dogs to falafels or fruit. You can choose any ethnic cuisine you can think of, delis or vegan options right the way up to the most exclusive fine dining and restaurants owned by celebrity chefs.

Nightlife...

The bars and clubs in New York are constantly evolving, with a new hot spot opening every week. Vibrant Times Square is where many visiting families head for popular places like the Planet Hollywood. The Lower East Side is best known for its band nights and music venues, and the Meatpacking District is a good choice for upmarket restaurants and trendy bars.
