Osaka holidays...
GENERAL
Osaka is Japan's third largest city, and one of its most interesting. A thriving metropolis, it is balanced between its long history and futuristic present. Overlooked by one of the country's most impressive 16th century castles are the modern and commercial districts and sizable 'amusement areas'. Osaka holidays are ideal for visitors wanting to experience Japan's culture in the city considered the best for eating, sightseeing and having fun.
Osaka is a large city, divided into many districts. Minami is in many ways its cultural heart, with fashionable shopping and plenty of sights. It is home to numerous museums, as well as Japan's oldest temple, Shitenno-ji, built in 593. The Municipal Museum of Fine Art is a great place to visit to see a huge collection of Japanese art.
The lively waterfront Bay Area is the place to escape from the bustle of the city. Particularly popular with young Osakans, it is packed with shopping centres, entertainment and places to eat. Favourite attractions include Universal Studios Japan, the second biggest theme park in the country, and a superb aquarium.
A must-see on holidays to Osaka is Osaka Castle. It is a fascinating building situated in the Osaka Castle region; a small area of the city consisting of the castle itself and a variety of museums and theatres. Top picks include the Science Museum, which is a great choice for kids, and the Osaka Museum of History.
Osaka has a diverse and exciting nightlife, offering everything from a night of arts and culture to a big night of clubbing. Minami and America-mura attract the city's younger population to the trendy bars, clubs and music venues; whereas Kitashinchi has a variety of high-class bars and fine dining restaurants where business people tend to visit.
Osaka holidays are the best time to try some real Japanese food. There is a wide choice available, ranging from street vendors to excellent restaurants. Close to Osaka Station, there are a number of large department stores with floors of gourmet restaurants. Local specialties include okonomiyaki, a thin pancake filled with miso paste, and takoyaki, octopus with dumplings.
