In any shake up of most attractive East European cities, Krakow would always feature somewhere in the upper reaches of the list. Why? This city' ranks with Prague and Vienna for sheer beauty, yet still remains blissfully free of mass tourism.

That the city survived the Second World War more-or-less intact goes some way to explaining why it's head and shoulders above other destinations. Its assembly of historic buildings and monuments are ranked by UNESCO as one of the world's top 12 historic gems.

The old town, Stare Miasto, centres on the perfect geometry of the Rynek Glowny, the town square. From here, a roll-call of Renaissance and Gothic structures opens out. The Sukiennice, the imposing cloth hall, is one of the grandest sights in the city. Take a seat in one of the square's delightful cafes and see if you can count all the gargolyes before you've finished your latte.

Shoppers will appreciate Poland's keen prices - even the swanky stores along the ul Florianska offer good value. For the best view in town, head out to Wawel Hill and, more specifically, to the cathedral's Zygmunstowska Tower. For five hundred years this area was home to the country's political and religious leaders and, today, still feels regal and removed from the bustle of downtown Krakow.

Despite the grandeur and the gargoyles, Krakow's a youthful place - its popular university sees to that. Weekend breaks to Krakow effortlessly combine world-class sightseeing and sociable nights out in the city's decent restaurants and buzzing bars.
