The Romans knew a good thing when they saw one. Conquering the island in 123 BC, they quickly established this land at the crossroads of the Mediterranean to be a lucrative trading centre, with prosperous settlements dotted around its coast.

Fast forward two thousand years, and the settlements remain. True, they've changed appearance somewhat, and the traders have been replaced by tourists but the island still stands at the centre of the Mediterranean - emotionally, if not geographically. Accept no imitations, when it comes to premier league island destinations, Majorca holidays still set the pace.

A welcome that's warm and genuine
Centuries' worth of invasion and settlement has made the Majorcans an extremely sociable lot. They're far more chatty and approachable than their mainland neighbours and will think nothing of going that extra mile to ensure your stay is memorable. Spend time in a locals' bar in Palma, the island's vibrant capital, and you'll see what we mean.

Delve into the island's rocky heart
Hotels in Majorca are generally concentrated around the island's coast - and, with some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, that's understandable. Yet, to the north, the mighty Traumuntana mountain range pierces the perma-blue sky and offers challenging hikes for the fit and fearless.

Take just a short drive inland and it's like the first 737 never touched down. Here, in the still of the warm Balearic sun, you can rest awhile amid silent olive groves, take lunch in a shaded village square (sample some of the excellent island wines) and admire the work of local artisans: ceramics, leather and lace being particularly good buys.

All the fun you can handle. And then some.
Resorts such as Alcudia, Cala d'Or and Palma Nova offer endless sands to stretch out on, great tapas restaurants and nightlife that deftly pulls off the trick of being lively, yet welcoming: the rowdiness factor having long since left for distant shores. The island prides itself on being a family destination. Cheap holidays to Majorca offer all the value and variety any family could wish for.
